Happy New Year everyone!!

Happy New Year

Okay, so this post isn't a very exciting one.  The holidays have definitely taken a toll on the amount of time that I've had to print lately.  I have started carving and working on a couple new pieces, including some more single colors and working up ideas for a possible 2-3 color reduction.

Just before Christmas I got an unexpected email though.....I sold my first print through Etsy!!

A gentleman completely across the country purchased my African Painted Dog print for his girlfriend for Christmas.  I was very excited and rapidly packaged it up and had it in the mail the very next morning.  I took a big hit on shipping because I wanted it to arrive in time for Christmas.

It's very exciting getting to sell to someone that you do not know and is from a couple thousand miles away.  In the next couple weeks, I really want to try and invest a bit more time into updating and adding pieces to my Etsy page (which is accessible from the tabs up above).

I just wanted to say Happy New Years to all who check in on this page and look forward to a hopefully productive upcoming year.  Have fun and be safe everyone.

"a", "Green Street", "Taco" and "Zion" mini

Even though my up dates are a little slower these days, I still manage to work out a couple prints a week.  Granted this process all takes place within 5-6 hours on a single day, but.....it's at least progress towards their end points.  I suppose one update every other week isn't too bad though. =D

As shown above though, I printed the second color to the "a" print.  The first color, a light grey was for the shadows on the neon tubing.  This second color, medium grey, is another shadow layer for this piece.  I have this piece marked for 6 colors and I'm 1/3 of the way through.  I'm currently in the progress of marking all the areas that will need carved before printing the next layer.

I'm trying a new "high tech" registration method using a pieces of matboard.  The taco print is actually the first to test this configuration on.  So far though, I've also used it on the "a" and the Green Street print and so far so good.

Taco is a little different than what I'm used to printing where the tubing is generally clear or has a light color to it.  With "taco" the tubing is green...as are the letters.  The shadow and the hardware for the neon tubing support are the current grey colors.  Most of this block has already been carved for the next color, but I do have some smaller areas to clean up before moving onto the next color.

Green Street is also coming along very nicely so far with the new registration.  I usually don't ink small areas, I've done it on multiple pieces, but I generally like to see the print completely transform from layer to layer.  There is so much little detail in this piece though that I've decided to focus on one house at a time.

First up is the yellow house on the street.  I first printed a light yellow and then a second darker yellow (created with a mix of red and blue that I also mixed up).  I find it odd that the color I mixed almost matches up with a Yellow Ochre I made with a different yellow and Sepia.....I don't know how that works, apparently their are some similar colors in the Sepia mix.

This piece is actually working out pretty good and I've begun the carving of the yellow house.  The blue house is probably next, but I'm also considering the sky since it is actually the next lightest color.  There will be reflection of the sky in some of the windows so I'll have to figure out which way I want to go before I move on.

Finally for this update is the piece that I did not get to work on this past week.  I have one color left to print on this piece and then it's done.  Very excited about this, too bad I just didn't have the time for it.  A dark green, which is the shadow color for the foliage, is the only color that is left to print.  This piece is slightly mis-registered, but overall I like how it has turned out so far.

This little print will be one of my submissions for next years mini-print exhibition in New York.  I will also be starting a couple newer mini-prints so that I have a variety to work with.

This is so far my first successful landscape.  I know that it's small sized help me to better understand how to create these and hoping to make some larger pieces that turn out just as well if not better.  I always keep in mind that with every piece I make I'm learning something new and in that learning I'll be able to better each attempt.

Lots of new projects happenin'!

Welcome back everyone....this actually includes myself too.  The US holiday time is a pretty busy time at my full time job and I've been working quite a bit.  Through all the extra work I have managed to slowly create some new work and make progress on some other pieces.

First up is my new version of the Green Street print.  I got to print the first color, a light grey last week and I'm in the process of carving those areas area.  This block, much like it's predecessor, has a good deal of detail in it.  In the image above you can see pink marks that I've made that help me to identify what is getting carved away.  These areas are mostly very small sections and require a good bit of concentration so that I don't over carve an area or accidentally slip and cause this piece to become yet another victim of mistakes.

Here are images of the inked block and the first printed color.  I've really wanted to make some type of artwork of this scene for such a long time.  Most of the houses along this street are fairly similar and the house colors don't vary too much.  These particular houses though are all different - the first in white, the second is blue, the third is yellow and the final one is a red brick building.  The color difference and the way that the shadows fall during late afternoon create a wonderful composition of shape and color.

Next up is the "a" print that I started a month or two ago.  The top image is a previously shown image of this piece, but I figured I'd use it as a reference for the printed image below it.  I'm trying a lot of fairly new knowledge that I picked up while my wife and I were on vacation.  I've spent a good bit of time since returning studying actual images of neon as well as artworks from Dave Lefner, Randy Ford and Robert Cottingham.

Needless to say, I'm not the first to go after this subject matter.  Many artists have focused on the way that light affects their surroundings and I am completely in love with that concept.

Finally, the inked block for the 3x3" mini reduction print of an area of Zion National Park in Utah.  This piece, to me, is taking longer than it should now.  I'm now two colors away from completion and of course I've started focusing on the carving of these other blocks.  I'm noticing a trend with me where as I close in on the end of a project I pick up others and start to ignore the one that is almost complete.....I do plan on having this piece done before Christmas hits.

I did notice a little bit of movement in the registration of the piece which may be another reason for my pushing it off.  I know that the errors are there and don't want to add to them, but the only way to finish is to add the next layer of color - green.

Manhattan Graphics Center - Exhibition

Hi everyone!!  Just as an FYI, I have two pieces in the 3rd New York International Miniature Print Exhibition is New York City.  If anyone is near or around New York City and would like to see a large variety of subject matter in a very small printed format (3x3") then please go and visit the Manhattan Graphics Center.

They are located at 250 West 40 St, 5th Floor - New York, NY  10018.
The exhibit runs until November 28, 2017.

When I submitted to this show, it was the first outside of Pennsylvania show that I had submitted too.  I really, really wanted to go and see the show in person, but after coming back from California my wife and I have fallen into a yearning for more Disney...so I put extra money that I had possibly planned on visiting New York with into the Disney World fund and now I have no money for a New York trip....maybe next years.

(My two submitted prints - "M" & "Shake Shack" - each 3x3")

Another issue I faced with going to see it was that there must've been a small error somewhere along the line and I never got a rejection or acceptance response.  I didn't know that I had even been accepted until a week before the show was to start.  I packed up prints as fast as I could and mailed them priority mail to New York to try and get them there in time.  I wasn't even sure that they had made it in time to be displayed, but in one of the photos on their Facebook page I found my neon "M" print hanging on the wall.

So again, if you are around New York City within the next couple weeks and want to see a show with varied printmaking techniques then please stop by.  There hours are as follows:

Monday: 6pm-10pm
Tues - Fri: 10am-10pm
Sat and Sunday: 10am-6pm

From big to small

La Rose Shop (10x20")

Hi everyone!

Been working on getting some current projects finished up while creating some new ones as well.

I'm very close to finishing up the La Rose Shop that I started...what seems like forever ago.  Wow...I actually looked back through this blogs history and I was using a Sharpie marker to ink over my transferred pencil lines back in January.  I do know that this piece sat on a shelf for quite a while after things started to not work out as I anticipated.

A couple days back I mixed up a batch of dark red to use on both the La Rose Shop and the mini (3x3") Zion landscape (seen later in this post).  I actually used the color I mixed only on the Zion piece and decided to darken it to try and enhance the contrast between the letters on the La Rose Shop and the shadow being cast by the neon tubing and it turned out much better than I anticipated.

Initially, I had the La Rose Shop set for 10 colors, but after printing this very dark maroon I have decided that I like it enough in areas that I've reduced the number of colors to 9 instead.  I was going to print the sky color (light blue) and then use black for the hardware that holds the neon tubing, but this maroon looks very good on that hardware.  Now I only have the sky to print.  Very excited to have this print almost complete....it's been so long.

Zion (3x3") Mini Print

I'm on the 4th color out of 7 for this mini landscape of a picture that I took a couple years back at Zion National Park in Utah.  I was actually not going to add this current red color to this piece, but though that the rock areas in the foreground were pretty close in color and needed something to create some contrast.

This print was initially supposed to be submitted to the Mahattan Graphics Center mini print exhibition that is currently showing, but time just wasn't friendly to me as the deadline arrived for submission.  Perhaps if this print is still around come next year, maybe I'll submit it then.

This is a picture of the 3x3" lino block for the Zion piece.  The registration jig is very crude, but from what I've seen from other artists....this is what works for quite a few.  The carving for this piece is already completed and I'm just waiting on the red to dry up a little so I can print the next color.

Updates!!

So since my last post I've been working on a number of things including the printing of the next color on the 3x3" Zion Landscape print.  I'm trying to think about what is going to come of this piece next.  Originally planned for 4 to 5 colors, I think I'm now looking more at 6...maybe 7.

There is a tree just offset of center which has both a highlight green and a shadow green.  These 2 colors will also be used in the background as well for tree lines and bushes.  I also need a blue for the sky and I'm kicking around the idea of a shadow color for small areas of the rocks on the bottom half of the print.  I didn't really want to go with 7 colors, but I may just have to see how this works out.

Yesterday, I transferred a new version of my Green Street print.  The last one really lost its way when I began the print with a color that was too dark for what I wanted.  The detail of the drawing was also not up the level that I needed and there were a lot of questionable areas where I didn't really know what was happening.

I took the original image and cropped it into a much tighter view.  This image reduced the number of houses and helped to show me details that were difficult to see when the image was not as close.  I finished the tracing of the image I was working last Thursday and did the transfer Saturday.  I also started the tracing of the transfer with Sharpie marker.  I didn't honestly plan on inking the entire piece with the marker, but I guess once I got started I just forgot and wound up finishing the piece.  I am going to be looking at it and trying to refine some of the details before I move ahead to the carving stage.  I also have to cut down the lino that it's on to the 8x10" size.

Finally.....these two pieces that I completed within the last year or so have been accepted into the Southwest Pennsylvania Council for the Arts: 22nd Annual Juried Exhibition.  I'm very excited to once again be accepted into this show.  Last year was my first year to submit and get selected into.  The show includes artists from all over Southwestern Pennsylvania and is probably the largest show that I've ever been accepted into.

I'll be getting these two pieces framed up and ready for the show probably within a week or so.

Mini 3x3 Utah landscape

I recently started working on a new small 3x3 print.  I printed the 2nd color the other day and would really like to get the 3rd printed this coming Thursday.

The image is a crop of a photo that I took during a trip to Zion National Park two years ago.  I'm hoping that this will help me develop my skills in areas where I feel I'm not so strong.  I see tons of linocut images from other artists who do landscapes and I'm completely in awe.  I really want to learn this process and though I've tried previously with landscapes....they have pretty much all failed.

My previous attempt at a landscape from Utah has really hit a snag after a bad selection of color on my part as well as not really understanding how to tackle the issue of grasses.  In my mind, creating the illusion of grass should be very simple, but each attempt that I've tried has ultimately resulted in failure.  I plan on creating a small 3x3 with grass so that I can try to teach myself the process in a more timely manner than larger prints afford me.  Keep in mind that these prints generally take me between 1-3 months until they are complete, so the learning (and sometimes the failures that come with it) take place over a long period of time.  By the time I realize that what I was trying isn't working out, I've probably already invested 3-4 weeks into the print.  That includes development of the image, the transfer to the lino block, the tracing in Sharpie Marker, carving of the block and printing.

I'm constantly trying to learn how to better myself and creating multiple projects at a time that range from being very comfortable to very difficult for me.  The comfortable ones will still offer challenges, but ones that can still be overcome and ultimately end with a nice final product (it always feel good to have a final print in your hands).  The difficult ones obviously are the flip side....they generally cause me great stress and I (probably) 9 times out of 10 come away with nothing, but the actual experience itself and the knowledge that is gained from at least trying.

I'M BACK!! And I've gotten a little bit done...

So I've been back from vacation for a little under two weeks and was very excited to get back into the groove.  I'm really pushing to get this La Rose Shop piece done.  The image on the left I did the day after I got back from vacation and I just printed the image on the right yesterday.  The colors weren't initially what I was thinking, but they are starting to grow on me slightly.

A part of me really wishes I had just done a flat color on both sides of the sign rather than the bricks, but...it's too late now.  I have a color that will print over a couple of the bricks and then I can print the color for the letters, the sky and the shadow for the neon tubing that is cast onto the letters.

So only 3 colors to go before this piece is finished.

This is the current state of the block as of yesterday while printing.  I have currently carved a good portion of the inked area away.  I did leave a part of the left hand side of the block in place so that it could bump up against my registration setup.

I've waited almost 3 years for this....

So it's been a while since my last post.  I'm slowly...and I do mean slowly, carving away the brick areas on the La Rose Shop piece.  I'm also preparing a couple new pieces and bought some additional paper a couple days ago to start printing those pieces.

Art for me lately has been pushed to the side as I've been focusing on getting ready for a vacation that I've been planning and saving for for the last 3 years.  Getting ready includes cleaning the house, making sure that my wife and I have everything that we could possibly need and the beginning of packing.  I usually wait for the last couple days before to start this process, but this time I want everything ready for when my wife gets off work this Sunday.

It's her first time to California and will be only my second.  My last time was back in 2001 (if I remember correctly) and there is very little that I remember.  I had gone out for an animation convention in hopes of securing a job as an animator.  The trip, though fun, really was a smack in the face when it came to learning about the profession I had chosen to follow.  Even though a couple interviews had occurred during that week nothing ever came of them and my life continued on.

Fast forward almost 17 years and I'm ready to go see it all again.  The only things remaining from the last trip are a single Disney California Adventure postcard and a Disneyland tee shirt.  I have no photos....no nothing.  So this time, I'm going to make sure that I get a whole lot of everything.  Very excited.  This will probably be my last post until I return mid-September.

Very excited.

La Rose Shop - Back at it again!

Pictures of the block and printed image.

Wound up having to take today off unexpectedly due to some car issues for my wife.  It took most of the morning to get the car towed and fixed and when I finally got home I decided that I was going to do something with this piece.

I mixed up a yellow ochre like color with some Hansa Yellow and Sepia and printed a new brick color for this piece.  The bricks are a light tan color, but since this piece isn't working out as expected and there is very little to no contrast I've decided to press on with some vibrant colors.

I like the look of the layout for this piece, but unfortunately the neon tubes are so small that they are actually difficult to discern again the light yellow background.  Hoping that with some additional colors this piece will start to come together.

Zion - New Mini Print - 3x3"

A while back I posted a photo (see below) of a mini print that I had started.  Due to life and the general business that it entails, I never had the chance to start it.

After yesterdays issues with printing the light orange I decided that I really wanted to get right back on the linocut horse and get printing.  I had everything ready for this print so the picture above is the first printed layer.  You can the Sharpie marker showing in the yellow as it transferred with the ink and will continue to do so for the first couple layers.  This print is set to be an edition of 10, but any errors may change that...so hopefully the errors will be minimal as they were with the other mini prints I did.

I should be able to hopefully move quickly through this print and have updates at least once a week while working with it.

It's been almost 3 weeks!

B - 8x8 Reduction Linocut - Complete!

It's been quite a while since I've had a chance to actually do some work.  First on my list was to finish the "B" neon that I've been working on.  I'm happy with the final product, but wish I had done a few things differently.

The only issue that I really have with the print is that the yellows that are printed have less contrast than even shown in this photo.  I feel I've taken some big steps in making the hardware for the neon look more realistic.

As good as the B print went, I then started printing the next color on the Utah landscape piece that I've been working on....things did not go as planned.

This is a detail shot of the newly printed light orange.  As you can see it did not adhere well to the print at all.  I'm really unsure as to what I'm going to do next with this piece now.  Next step may be to actually print white over the green and then try another version of light orange.

I always have issues with the yellow that I use and perhaps now it's time to actually move on from it.  It's generally very thick and when I use tack reducer to loosen it up it almost never works for me.  If you look closely down in the detail areas at the bottom you can also see where it filled in the carved areas and ruined this particular print.

I'm going to keep at this piece, but my happiness with it is not where it should be.

To add to my issues, my brayer that I use most has also acquired an issue.

Generally the brayer is not shiny, but when I grabbed it off the shelf today I discovered that the surface of the roller looked odd.  Parts of it were shiny and slightly tacky.  When I started to try and wipe it with a paper towel I found that it started to slightly pull it apart.  I did a full cleaning with vegetable oil, dawn dish detergent and simple green and managed to clean it all off, but after using it and cleaning it after printing...I discovered that the issue was back.....

Guess I have some looking to do for possibly a new brayer.

I have torn down some paper for a new 3x3 print and hope to start that sometime next week.

Neon B is almost finished!

The other day I had some extra time and really wanted to get moving along with the neon B.  The color was easy enough to mix...since it came straight outta the tube.

It's unfortunate that Daniel Smith stopped manufacturing relief inks.  This red is spectacular and better than a lot of reds that I've used.  Hopefully once I run out of my ink supply of this particular red I will have found another one to take it's place.

The block for the B has been carved and is ready for the next printing.  All that now remains is the shadow red and then this piece will be finished.

Beyond this piece, I've been working at coming up with a color that will advance the progress of the La Rose Shop.  I'm not overly fond as to the direction that that particular piece is going.  I've really let it sit for a good while and usually once a week I pull it out and look it over.  I think I've come up with an appropriate color to continue with, but I'm still going to let it sit as I continue to mull over what's going to happen with it.

I've been doing the same with the Green Street piece.  I feel that I made a color mistake early and I'm not really sure about how I feel about it.  The print to this point doesn't look terrible, I'm just not fond of the colors.  Guess when the time comes I'll restart work on it....still have some thinking to do though.

B carving and the beginning of a new piece!

Hi everyone!

I have had a fairly productive week and though I have a good bit of stuff to update, I also have other things around the house that I need to get done tonight.  My first part of this update is that the "B" is carved and ready to be printed.  I'm hoping that I'll have some time tomorrow to print.  I only have two colors remaining on this print....red and shadow red.  It's always a good feeling when you can see the light at the end of the tunnel for a piece that you've been working on.

Next up is a new piece that I'm starting which is a neon "a".  The "a" actually comes from a previously failed piece that I had been working on.  About a year ago I was working on a print of the Las Vegas Harley Davidson Cafe sign (in Las Vegas obviously).

Here is a photo of the failed piece.  If you look closely you can see that the ink was not adhering to the previous layer of ink...or something...I was never able to figure out what went wrong, but I do believe it had to do with some older yellow ink that I was using.

I really loved how that piece was turning out and I'm currently working it into a larger piece as well...the one above was 9x12 and the current is 16x20 (if I remember correctly).  I also really liked how the "a" in this piece looked so I decided to blow it up into a 10x10" reduction.  I'm currently in the progress of tracing over the pencil lines with Sharpie marker and if time permits I should be finished inking it up and carving by Saturday.

Here is the current progress on the new neon "a" print.

Have a wonderful day/night and I'll update with more new pictures and info hopefully in another couple days.

Neon B - Utah Landscape update

Today I printed the next color on my neon "B" reduction linocut.  So far I've had 4 different versions of yellow printed.  Even the shadow on the neon tubing is a very warm yellow....it almost appears orange, but it's not.

Todays color was the shadow thrown by the neon tubing on the light yellow "B" lettering on the sign itself.  Other than those hiccups from the last printing, these prints are registering very well with very, very little deviation.  I'm very happy so far with the progress this print has been making and should be printing the next color very soon.

The color I used for this layer is actually a version of the color I just printed for the Utah landscape that I have in the works.  I found that by adding some Sepia to the yellow I could dull it down into more of a Yellow Ochre styled color (which is what I did on the landscape).  For this particular color, I added less Sepia than I did previously and got a very nice shadow color.

I'm also starting to advance on another 3x3 mini print, but find that I'm not all that fond of the image yet.  It's another landscape that has a lot more detail than the Utah landscape and it's a bit tough to identify areas on a 3x3 inch square so I'm starting to take small personal liberties with the image.

I've also been slowly carving away the Utah landscape lino.  Below is my current progress.  I'm really hoping that this works out.  I've seen so many fantastic linocuts of landscapes with grasses in them that I really, really want this to turn out.  I will say that if it doesn't then at least I've gained the "what-not-to-do" experience.  This one is almost complete and printing should begin once I get some free time, but with the American July 4th holiday around the corner - my work should be nice and busy.

Until next time!  Have a nice day/night.

Got some updates to share!

Hello everyone!  These updates are becoming tougher and tougher as my regular jobs summer kicks in.  We are generally much busier in the summer months and though I'm still managing to get some work done, getting these updates out is a bit tougher.  Perhaps I'll attempt at smaller updates about individual projects.

To start off though, this past week I had the wonderful experience of selling my first "Diner" print to a dear college friend of mine.  I haven't seen him in quite a few years, but he had expressed interest in possibly buying one of the prints.  We met up for lunch and I must say that I had a wonderful time playing catch up with him.  We were both Art Education students and had a good many classes together and roomed together during a pre-student teaching experience in Philadelphia.  Even though a good bit of time has passed (almost 10 years out of college) and I had concerns that I wouldn't know what to talk about, I truly had a fantastic time meeting with him.  I am very proud that my Diner print has now found a home with him and hope to keep more in touch with him as the years go by.

I've also been spending some time working on the neon "B" project.  This past Saturday I printed the bright yellow of the neon tubing and like almost everytime I print in yellow...I had a problem.  The image on the bottom right above shows nice ink ridges that were formed when I ran the print through the press and pulled the paper off.  I've experienced this type of ink problem before with my failed Cafe print (which coincidentally used this same yellow ink).  I added some tack reducer to loosen up the ink and reduced the pressure on the press some more and still continued getting this issue.

I wound up scrapping an entire pile of ink and restarting from scratch.  I usually gather a large pile of ink and then break it down into what I need since I try to work with multiple prints starting with a same base color at the moment.  This time around I reduced the pressure of the press, lightened up the amount of ink I was putting on the lino and did a little bit of hand burnishing.

Thankfully that worked out for me and the bottom left image is the current status of that print.  I have already carved away the neon tubing and before starting this post, began the process of going over the lino block to make sure I didn't miss anything that needed carved.

I've also been spending some time on my Utah landscape.  Using that same yellow as with the "B", I added some Sepia to darken it up a bit to create a darker grass color.  I wanted a Yellow Ochre style of color and managed something that was a little darker, but I felt that it was perfectly fine for what I was doing.

I don't feel that there is much exciting happening with this particular print quite yet, but within the next color of two things should really start to take shape.

I'll do my best to work on smaller updates to keep anyone reading this a little appraised of the situation of my work.  Thanks for reading.
